6 for 1! Is this deal three years ago a win-win situation?

Basketball

Time returns to the 2022 offseason, the Celtics and the Pacers reached a deal:

- the Celtics gave Daniel Thes, Aaronne Smith, Stauskas, Malik Fetts, Juwan Morgan and a 2023 first-round pick

- the Pacers gave Brogdon

After the 6-for-1 deal was completed, the general view from the outside world is: the Celtics won and spent only a bunch of scraps to get a former Rookie.

The famous sports media posted a picture directly on the open stand: Look at the Celtics' bargaining chips for Brogdon (meaning nothing).

Let's talk about the Celtics first, this deal is indeed very good.

One season before the trade, Brogden had just played the worst performance in recent years with the Pacers. At that time, he only played 36 games due to injury, averaging 19.1 points, 5.1 rebounds and 5.9 assists per game, but his three shooting percentage was 44.8%/31.2%/85.6%, and his real shooting percentage was only 55.7%, which was not as efficient as the Bucks in the last year.

The 2022 Celtics just lost to the Warriors in the finals. The series exposed their lack of organizers and projections. Brogden can be said to be a perfect addition, and the Celtics still buy at the bottom and poach.

Of course, the effect is also very significant. After the transaction was reached, the probability of the Celtics winning the championship quickly rose to the top in the league. In the first year of joining the Celtics, Brogdon won the best sixth man as a substitute.

Although the Celtics were eventually eliminated by the Heat in the Eastern Conference Finals this year, in the offseason that year, the Celtics used Brogdon and Rowe as their main bargaining chips to exchange for Holiday, who eventually helped the Celtics win the championship last year.

From the perspective of results, this deal that year did bring a championship to the Celtics, so no matter what, the Celtics are not the ones who lose.

Look at Pacers again. After that deal, many people laughed at the Pacers management and almost gave Brogdon for free. However, now, the situation seems to be a little different.

First, the important motivation for the Pacers to trade at that time was to clear the contract (67.5 million remained for three years when Brogdon traded), prepare for Halliburton as the core to rebuild, and look to the future.

Secondly, although the Pacers got more bargaining chips, Stauskas, Malik Fetts, and Juwan Morgan never played again after this deal, so in fact they only had 3 for 1. Theis, one of the

bargaining chips, helped the Celtics reach the finals the previous season and averaged 12.5 minutes per game in the playoffs. It seems pretty good, but it is actually a premium contract (27 million left in the transaction, and the team option for the last year is the last year).

The fact is, in the first year after joining the Pacers, Thes had knee surgery before the start of the regular season. He only played 7 games in a season, and then he was cut by the Pacers after only one game in the next season.

So, in this deal, the Pacers really liked is Nesmith and the first round pick.

Nestmith was the 14th pick in the first round of 2020, just behind Halliburton, but because the Celtics' growth environment was not good, Nesmith did not play any expectations in the past two years.

The year before the trade, he only played 52 regular season games, averaged only 11 minutes per game, scored 3.8 points, shot 39.6% from the field and 27.0% from the three-point shooting rate, which was completely in line with the 3D expectations of Lotto's net worth - from this point of view, you can probably know why everyone thought the Celtics were robbing at that time.

Although Nesmith was very confident in himself, the Celtics were in the critical stage of the championship, so they sent him to the Pacers for training. It turned out that the tree was moved dead and the people moved alive, and Nesmith was really fighting out by the Pacers. In his first season as a member of the Pacers, Nesmith became the Pacers' starter and averaged 10.1 points per game, shooting 42.7% from the field and 36.6% from three-point shooting percentage.

Last season was his second year of joining the Pacers, and then averaged 12.2 points per game in the regular season, increasing his three-point shooting percentage to 41.9%, and helping the Pacers return to the Eastern Conference Finals.

Unfortunately, last year's playoffs, Nesmith's performance was very poor, averaging 10.5 points per game, and his three-point shooting percentage dropped to 27.8%. Facing his old club in the Eastern Conference Finals, he had 3 of 16 three-pointers in total. If he scored two more goals, the Pacers would not be swept out 0-4.

Next is this year, Nesmith ushered in a big explosion.

In the regular season, Nesmith only played 45 games, but in the games he played, he averaged 12.0 points per game and was extremely efficient. His three shooting percentage was 50.7%/43.1%/91.3%, and his real shooting percentage was as high as 65.3%.

Playoffs, as of the end of G2 of the Eastern Conference Finals, Nesmith's performance: averaging 15.7 points, 6.2 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game, with a shooting percentage of 54.1%/54.4%/90.5% in the three events, and a crazy shooting percentage of 71.6%.

G1 in the Eastern Conference Finals became his masterpiece, falling behind by 17 points in the last 6 minutes of the last quarter. Nesmith scored 6 three-pointers and 2 free throws by himself, scoring 20 points in a single quarter, helping the Pacers to drag in overtime and eventually reverse.

And in G2, he still performed well. He played 32 minutes in the game, made 4 of 7 shots, 2 of 3 three-pointers, and scored 12 points, with a plus-negative value of +12, second only to Turner (+17) and Siakam (+16).

It is worth mentioning that the first round pick that year finally chose Shepard, who was also a rotation this year. He averaged 12.4 minutes per game, scored 3.4 points, and a three-point shooting percentage of 38.1%.

Since the Eastern Conference Finals, he has also caused quite a lot of trouble for the Knicks:

-G1, played for 7 minutes in the last quarter, without a single point, but it was very uncomfortable to defend Brunson, with a plus-negative value of +14

-G2, played for 13 minutes, made 2 of 3 three-pointers, scored 6 points, plus-negative value +8, and the highest substitute

Looking back three years after the completion of the transaction called robbery, it feels really different. Not only did the Celtics win the championship, but the Pacers also received rewards.

, especially Nesmith, has truly proved his value this year. He is indeed a very worthy young man. Now he is expected to help the Pacers return to the finals and even hit the first championship in team history, with a trade and a win-win situation.
