On May 29, Liverpool officially commemorated the 40th anniversary of the Heisel tragedy and remembered 39 fans who died.

Liverpool Football Club today commemorates 39 fans who lost their lives in the Heisel Stadium tragedy, which happened 40 years ago today. The tragedy happened on May 29, 1985, before the final between Liverpool and Juventus in Belgium. That night, an incident in the Z area of the stadium killed 39 people and injured hundreds. We express our condolences to all those affected by the Heisel tragedy.

Today, Liverpool CEO Billy Hogan and Ambassador Ian Rush will attend the "VersoAltrove" sculpture ceremony unveiled in Turin, as part of their 40th anniversary event at the invitation of Juventus. This new monument, designed by famous artist Luca Vitone, is located in a 2,000 square metre green space not far from the Allianz Stadium, including ginkgo trees, lavender bushes and a spiral platform of 65 meters long and more than three meters high. There is also a neon strip on the platform, which is clearly visible even in the dark.

Previously, Liverpool announced that it would set up a new monument in Anfield to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Heisel tragedy. Out of respect for Juventus’ commemoration today, “Eternal Connection” will be officially unveiled later this summer. The new monument will replace the existing memorial plaque on the Kenny Dalglish stand wall and move to a more conspicuous and accessible location, providing a dedicated space for remembrance and reflection. The final location is in consultation with key stakeholders and details will be confirmed separately.

This morning, Liverpool Chief Legal and External Affairs Officer Jonathan Bamber and former player John Aldridge will lay wreaths in front of the current Heather Monument in Anfield. Flags across the club will also be lowered at half a flag throughout the sky to show condolences.

Hogan: "I am honored to stand with Juventus in front of their monument today and look forward to welcoming Juventus to the unveiling of our new monument at Anfield later this summer. We will also commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Heisel massacre in Anfield today, remembering the 39 fans who lost their lives in this tragedy 40 years ago."
