Real Madrid officially issued a statement expressing its plan to oppose La Liga's overseas matches (Barcelona vs. Villarreal), believing that this move violates the fairness of the league's home and away cycle.

Overseas Tournament 2.0, La Liga continues to make money

At the Spanish Football Association's board of directors on August 11, 2025, Villarreal and Barcelona made a request to hold the 17th round of La Liga at the "Hard Rock Stadium" in Miami, USA. After receiving and verifying the relevant documents, the Royal Football Association of Spain will submit an application to UEFA and initiate relevant procedures to obtain authorization from FIFA.

Just when the Premier League's top players relied on their generous TV broadcast contracts to start the purchase of the big fortune, the Spanish Football Association took a different approach, starting with upgrading the specifications of overseas competitions, trying to expand the influence of the league. The league played overseas and hurt the league's foundation is neither a "battle of honor" like the Super Cup nor a "money-making battle" like the overseas competition. The La Liga is a more serious "official" competition, and obviously it cannot be treated in the general business competition model. The Spanish Football Association places Barcelona vs. Villarreal overseas, which is a harm and betrayal to the fans of the region. Once this model becomes routine, it will inevitably undermine the foundation of the community-based league.
