This summer, Leipzig's sister club New York Red Bulls wanted to introduce Werner, who has an annual salary of 10 million euros, and they were prepared to offer a two-and-a-half-year contract. However, the deal ultimately fell through because Werner's salary demands were too high.

New York Red Bulls director Guzman said in an interview with "The Athletic": "Werner is a great name, I believe the fans will like him. The opportunity was before us, but I don't think we were 100% convinced that this was the right decision for New York. So we did not go for it with all our strength. I was far from intending to sign a 'celebrity player', I Just want someone who can help make the team stronger. Forsberg and Moting are great players. Will we sign another player like them?
