Lichsteiner: I love Juventus but can t play for Inter Milan, I always bear the pressure of winning at Juventus

May 15th Juventus legend Lichsteiner talked about his reasons for rejecting Inter Milan and his Juventus career in an interview with the Milan Sports Daily.

When did you realize that you are an excellent player?

"When in Lazio, Derio Rossi and Reala helped me improve my defensive ability. Sabatini signed me at that time, and that experience was great. In the 2009 Italian Cup final against Sampdoria, I took the sixth penalty after the first five rounds of penalty draw. I longed for pressure, like this moment, and then I scored a goal."

Joined Juventus in the summer of 2011, and my career turning point. How hard is Conte's training?

"It's very hard! But what I remember most is not physical exhaustion, but Conte's control of tactics. He lets us understand everything about the opponent: what the opponent will do, how the situation evolves, and how to deal with each situation. We always have more preparation. Playing at Juventus is completely different. Conte makes us understand that if you want to be recorded in history, you must win. In the first year, only he firmly believed that we can accomplish great things. We trust him, withstand mental pressure, and in the last two months we are convinced that we can win."

Your historical position at Juventus' home court is inseparable from the first goal against Parma, and the ball shows the special tacit understanding between you and Pirlo.

"Yes, but I hope to be remembered for seven championships. But that goal is very important: the preseason was not going well, and the victory in the first game gave us confidence. Pirlo and I have a special understanding. As long as I run in place, the ball will come. This kind of cooperation is natural, and there is no need to practice much. I don't need to call him because Pirlo looks at the sixth route."

Which time I enjoyed the most?

"May seem old-fashioned, but every champion is equally precious. Sometimes the outside world thinks we are relaxed, but it's never easy. You always bear the pressure of 'must win'. The 2015-16 season reverse is incredible: after Cuadrado's derby goal, we started a long winning streak. This is absolutely extraordinary. The last championship (2017-18) is the hardest: we performed well but not perfectly, and Napoli is chasing. I enjoyed that moment, even though I knew I would leave."

Three low moments. Berlin Champions League Final?

"We are very close to the championship. Morata could have overtaken after equalizing. But luck in the league has never appeared in the Champions League. But there is no need to make excuses, look at the final opponents: Messi, Suarez, Neymar's Barcelona, and Ronaldo's Real Madrid. It's not embarrassing to lose to them."

Heart problem?

"I'm not afraid. The doctor explained the situation. I was in the hands of the top team and never worried about retirement."

Didn't choose the Champions League roster twice?

"Alegri's technical choice, but I returned in January. It was uncomfortable at the time, but there were always adversities in life, and I had to fight back."

Have you ever seen Buffon as angry at the Bernabeu Stadium as after that famous penalty kick?

"Never. But what I really should regret is 0-3 in the first leg: We are strong and should not lose. The referee's misjudgment is part of football. Although it is unfair, it must be accepted."

Why do you reject Inter Milan?

"Out of respect: I love Juventus, so I was unable to play for Inter. Now as a fan, I suffer, but Juventus will soon return to the top."

How do you view Lamela's gesture of returning home 4-0 when Juventus Roma 4-0?

"I don't know Totti has done similar actions before. Lamela has been insulting, and I reminded him that it's time to stop..."

What is the core left to you in Juventus' career?

"Mentality: You must do your best, enjoy a moment after winning the ball, and continue to fight for the next championship immediately. Some players are born for Juventus, while others are not. The former can withstand pressure, stay awake, convey the correct information, understand the weight of the jersey, and learn from the predecessors and set an example for the juniors."

With seven Serie A championships, Lichsteiner has become the foreign player with the most championships in Serie A history. "I won seven Serie A and many trophies, but also lost a lot: two Champions League finals (Juventus period) and one Europa League final (Arsenal period). This is how sports are. When I was young, I had dreams, but I would train hard and get a diploma, preparing to go to the bank if the football path is not smooth."

However, his football path was very smooth. He galloped on both ends of the wing offense and defense, fought in four of the five major leagues, except La Liga, leaving countless moments worth remembering. However, Lichsteiner is not the kind of person who lie on the sofa and indulges in memories: "I coached the youth training echelon and now lead the fourth-level team Wattsville Bonsterten. I want to accumulate experience slowly and confirm whether I am suitable for coaching."

Lichsteiner has played for Grasshoppers, Lille, Lazio, Juventus, Arsenal and Augsburg in his career. Win 7 Serie A, 5 Italian Cups, and 4 Super Cups.
