Captain s Battle? Famous: If I were Arteta, I would have Rice as captain instead of Odgao
May 8th talkSPORT host Jason Condy believes that Arsenal may face a leadership problem. Odegao is currently the Gunners' captain, but the former Chelsea defender questioned whether Odegao is the right person to wear the captain's armband, and Condy believes that Rice is more suitable to lead the team.
However, former Tottenham midfielder Jamie O'Hara strongly opposed this. After Arsenal was eliminated from the Champions League by Paris Saint-Germain, the two started a fierce debate on talkSPORT's "Sports Bar".
Condy asked, "Who do you prefer to follow, Rice or Odgao?" O'Hara replied, "It doesn't matter who wears the captain's armband, it doesn't matter, it's pure nonsense."
Despite this, Condy held on to his point of view and pointed out that Odgao's significant decline in performance this season is a key reason why his captain's status is questioned, although he also admitted that the Norwegian was plagued by injuries. O'Hara responded: "You can't take away his captain's armband, he's the captain." Condy retorted that Rice "is the real leader." O'Hara admits this, but he stresses: "But he is not the captain, and Odgao is the captain. Unless you want to give up this player, you should not deprive him of the captain's armband."
The two disagree on whether Odgao's captain status should be deprived of. Condy explained that this decision could turn Arsenal from a contender into a champion: “If you want to be a winner, that’s the decision you need to make.” O’Hara responded: “But that will kill his leadership.” Condy reminded O’Hara that he had questioned whether Odge should start, and O’Hara responded: “I said it’s something to discuss. If he’s not performing well, you can replace him, but that doesn’t mean he’s not the captain.”
Ultimately, Condy said he “doesn’t care” who will wear Arsenal’s captain’s armband in the future: “But if I were Arteta, I would consider giving Rice the captain’s armband.”
